In Cozumel, Mexico, we recommend a visit to Chankanaab National Park.

CruiseCompete's keys to Chankanaab are:

1. Easy to get to on your own from your ship;

2. Lots of memorable activities; and;

3. A great place to relax.

Chankanaab National Park was established by the Mexican government in 1980, and is just a 5-10-minute cab ride from where the cruise ships dock. The park is clean and well-maintained; the staff is friendly and very attentive; and it tends to be uncrowded on weekdays even when there are multiple ships in port.

Before you go, book a swim with dolphins or manatees. You can save quite a bit by booking with CruiseCompete's shore excursion partner link below through our site instead of booking through the cruise line. Expect to pay a bit over $100 per person for the more immersive swims, but that includes admission to the water park and a buffet lunch. It’s well worth the cost--the sensation of zooming across a lagoon pushed by a dolphin is one you'll remember for your entire life. You don't need to be a good swimmer as life vests are required and guides are there to help.

In addition to your dolphin swim, you can go on a kilometer-long zip line tour, take in a free sea lion show, see a few Mayan artifacts, shop for souvenirs, visit some crocodiles, and even go tequila tasting.

Several shacks on the shore rent snorkel and scuba equipment, and can provide guides if you would like one. The shore offers a great variety of sea life, as well as statues, Spanish cannon and Mayan artifacts sunk for visitor's viewing pleasure. The shore line here is rocky and is entered via stone steps, but there is also a small sandy beach area in a protected cove that's perfect for small children.

When you've had enough action for the day, the sandy shore is lined with lounge chairs, hammocks, and thatched umbrellas, and strolling waiters bring you food and drinks. It's a great way to relax before you head back to your ship.
