Great itin. on aging ship w/ exc. food, tours, entertainment; too slow dinner, April 30, 2016
Reviewer: dibster
Pros: Overall intinerary, shore tours, food, housekeeping, entertainment, organization
Cons: Toilets clogged too frequently; dinner service slow - no time to disembark after
Date of cruise: April 1, 2016
Departure port: Arles, France
Region visited: Europe
Cabin category: Balcony
Good for children: No
Good for teenagers: No
Wonderful week long cruise through Provence from Arles to Lyon. Great itinerary for exploring countryside; relaxed but excellent choice of morning and afternoon tours coming back to boat for lunch. Excellent meals with generally very good service although staff at dinner did not quite seem to have their act together and incapable of getting us out of dining room in less than 2+ hours. With dinner starting at 7:30 or 8, insufficient time to wander lovely small town ports afterwards. AmaDagio is one of oldest ships in AMA's fleet and will be retired after this season. Cabins not particularly well-designed; not efficient use of space for more storage. Good baths. Big problem with toilets which were often shut down over last few days of trip. Tour guides were uniformly exceptional; AMA uses the individual headset system which is terrific. After dinner entertainment was also uniformly excellent; seemed to take advantage of local small music/other groups each night. Food was very good to excellent. Much variety for all diets; staff easily made adjustments for special requests. Average age of guest was late 60's. No teens or children who would be bored.

This was our first river cruise, Christmas Time on the Danube aboard the AmaDagio. We wanted a relaxing pre Christmas time away from the usual hectic and hassle and this was exactly what we got - excellent food, no nickel and diming, a white and red wine with every dinner (no limit), outstanding staff, well coordinated city tours (included) and interesting shore excursions. Each stateroom has a keyboard and monitor to connect to the internet and this worked well. Our group was small during the city tours and for the sights we visited and all our guides were outstanding. There were activities and a program included every day. The AmaDagio was brand new when we were on it and she is a beautiful boat. The captain and crew were all fantastic. There were quite a number of families on our cruise with older children and the younger folks bonded together and from what I could tell they enjoyed the cruise as much as we did. This Christmas cruise was a very pleasant experience.
