Halifax was a nice surprise: As pretty as expected, and more interesting, with maritime museum, and a very moving, informative national immigration museum (at Pier 21, Canada's Ellis Island. Many city tours are available, including combined land and sea tour available at the waterfront.

Thankfully Peggy's Cove made up for the "whale watching" experience, June 20, 2012

Halifax NS. We decided to do the whale watching tour. So we got off one boat to get on a smaller boat with upstairs exposed seating and downstairs enclosed seating. What no one told us was that by it being the first week in June the likelihood of seeing whales in Halifax was slim to none. It was just a little early in the season. We were "watching" for about an hour before we realized there would be no whales today. I felt a little angry at the tour folks and a little sorry for them at the same time. The cruise season was just restarting back up after the winter and everyone wants to make a buck. What they should have done was to charge half the price and call it a Harbour Tour with nature watching. I was mostly disappointed for the grandkids who were desperate to see whales. When we returned from the whale watching we grabbed a cabbie who took us on the 45 minute drive to Peggy's cove. A quaint, beautiful little fishing village with a gorgeous well photographed lighthouse. The little village circles a small inlet that us actually in use for fishermen today. The lighthouse is set on some fabulous smooth rock that was left from the last glacial retreat. UNBELIEVABLE!! There were shops and at least 2 restaurants selling local souvenirs and local foods. Getting there was part of the fun also. Once you leave the city the highways are hilly and winding. Nova Scotia has been on my bucket List for at least 20 years and it was so worth the wait.

Peggy's Cove is not to be missed!, September 2, 2010

We arrived in Halifax having made no arrangements for excursions. In the terminal we were able to join a tour to Peggy's Cove that HAL offered. Cost was around $39 and because of our guide, Terry, was the BEST excursion of the week. For about three hours we were informed and entertained by a guide who is head and shoulders above any we have had on ANY cruise. Terry's narration of Halifax's history was spellbinding. As we ended the tour we all wished he was going on with us to the other ports! He was that good. The beauty and tragic history of Halifax and Peggy's Cove is not to be missed!

We visited Peggy's Cove, had read up on it, expected a quaint little fishing village, but got so much more. It was better than expected; there is a spiritual quality to the place, somewhat mystical, which we hadn't expected or read it might be. We'd read the AAA travel guide and decided to visit based upon that alone, coupled with the double-decker buses offered through the cruise line. Peggy's Cove will remain a special place in our heart. It is just an amazing place and it is difficult to even describe what all it holds...a must see place! The ponds and rocks dropped by the glaciers give it a mystical feel, it looks like something I would expect to see in Scotland: the rocks, little old houses, antique phone booths, lobster boats and cages just give this place a remarkable feel. I have never seen anything else like it and hope to visit again some day. We toured Halifax on the double-deckers after visiting the Cove. It was a very warm day, but we took in all three routes, learned quite a bit about the city and saw a lot of what it has to offer. We weren't able to get off the buses due to time limits, but would enjoy spending more time there to enjoy all it has to offer.
