Good but some negative issues, May 26, 2017

Pros: Well designed ship and mostly good service, especially in Luminae
Cons: Too many extra fee venues and irritating background music
Date of cruise: May 8, 2017
Departure port: Civitavecchia
Region visited: Mediterranean
Cabin category: Jr. Suite
Cabin number: 2158
We have made upwards of 20 cruises over the last 20 years, seven of them with Celebrity. While we have had mostly very good experiences on Celebrity, one issue that seems to be getting worse is the expansion of the number of extra fee venues and their escalating prices. The irritating background music piped all over the ship as well as on the TV seems to be geared to 30-year-olds rather than the over 50's crowd that dominates. Service can be a bit spotty in the bars, but is particularly good in Luminae and Murano. Entertainment was a mixed bag with several good performances, some fair and some poor. Cabin was well appointed and comfortable. The butler was very helpful and accommodating. Food was mostly quite good at the large buffet room, with lots of variety and well prepared dishes. However, the breakfast danish pastries and croissants have slipped in quality since our last cruises, and were gummy and tough. The other pastries, muffins and breads were excellent throughout.

Good for children: No
Good for teenagers: Yes
We are a younger couple. This was our first cruise. We did a lot of research before we made the reservation. We prefer upscale decor, fewer kids, great food and service. The Celebrity Reflection has met or exceeded our expectations in the above aspects. The cruise ship decor gave us a very high-end feeling. The cabin is spacious, clean and has a very comfortable bed. If they could make the TV adjustable so that I can easily watch the TV when I lie down on the bed, I would give a score of 101 for the cabin. The main dining room is our favorite place. It always provides a variety of food choices and they taste great! You might make a bad choice sometimes when choosing the dishes, but it is a cruise so try another dish. The staff were very friendly and gave us good advice. Our itinerary is 7 nights. Except for the 2nd night, all the waiters are very very good. Speciality Dining Experience: We tried Sushi On Five and the Murano. I prefer Murano because of their service and unique food. The desert samples for two is a must! The Sushi On Five did a really good job on sushi and sashimi but not on ramen. I am a lover or noodles so trust me you could find many Japanese ramen restaurants in San Jose or New York that can easily beat them. One tip for Speciality Restaurant reservations: If you want discount but miss the 1st night 30% discount opportunity, you can try to reserve through your main dining room waiter. They can apply a returning guest discount -20% for you. We were not aware of that when we made the reservation through our waiter but then realized that he applied a 20% returning guest discount for us. Buffet: The buffet restaurant (Ocean View Cafe) has a very nice view on 14th deck. I found many good items to eat there. The only issue is if you go there during the time between two typical meals, such as 3-4pm, because it is between the lunch and dinner time, we could not find any entrees except for spaghetti. And you will find most of the vendors are closed because they are preparing for the next meal. This is also the case if you go after 9 p.m. You will probably be a little bit of disappointed if you are a meat lover. Entertainment: We don't want to be surrounded by kids when we are on our vacation. And this ship met my expectation. There are many couples of 30's-40's age and also a lot retired people. The ship does not carry some special activity or entertainment facilities, such as water slides, but it has the theater, the fancy fitness center and some other fun stuff. I saw people were in line for the Silent Disco, which looks fun. And the live music is awesome. We didn't do much activity onboard this time. But from the daily newspaper, the ship provided a lot of shows and activities about art and history which looked fun for me as well. I would like to participate some on my next cruise. Overall, this is a wonderful vacation experience for young couple. I will definitely do a Celebrity cruise in the future. But I might want to try the other company as well.

I love the iLounge and pool deck area is wonderful - I was on with many adults so really not sure about the kids programs but the food is fabulous, and so are the specialty restaurants as well as the spa area. Would definitely love to go again.
