Interesting city with enough for an afternoon, September 14, 2010
Reviewer: sfvoyage

Pros: Chinatown, some historic sites, modern mega malls

Cons: Pales in comparison to Tokyo and other Japanese cities

When I was living in Tokyo, I used to take day trips to Yokohama from time to time. It is by no means exciting, but it offers its own rewards. If you have limited time, by all means head straight to Tokyo (or, better yet, Kyoto). However, there is certainly enough to do, see and experience for a good afternoon visit in Yokoyama. Yokoyama has a small but interesting Chinatown. You can also walk up the hill for a good view as well as a visit of several historic sites, including a cemetary where many foreigners who had played a part (admirals, architects, etc.) in local history in the last century were buried. It also has a couple of huge malls and entertainment complexes, including a gigantic ferris wheel that's beautifully lit up at night. The city is compact and well-served by buses and mini vans.

Not worth the visit if you are taking an excursion to Tokyo or somewhere else, September 14, 2010
Reviewer: Doug62

Pros: Good public transport, most sites are within walking distance

Cons: Not very interesting with Tokyo one hour away

If your ship stops in Yokohama and you have the chance to do a shore excursion to Tokyo, then take the shore excursion. Yokohama is a nice place to visit if you've done Tokyo and are not interested in spending the time to get there and back. Highlights of Yokohama are Chinatown (probably the cleanest Chinatown you will ever see anywhere!) and the shopping malls with all their electronics. The port has an amusement park nearby with a ferris wheel that is lit up beautifully at night. But Yokohama pales in comparison to Tokyo, so if you can, go to Tokyo instead.

Entrance port for Tokyo, August 26, 2010
Reviewer: Todd Todd

Pros: Well organized for getting you out of town

Cons: It is NOT a tourist town

Yokohama is the traditional harbor city for Tokyo. The huge harbor facilities dwarf the city behind them. You can see most of the important sights in Yokohama right from the ship, the towers, ferris wheel and the bridges in the harbor area. Most passengers will choose between going into Tokyo or Kamakura. Tokyo is the most modern city in the world. If you were expecting geisha and bonsai then you should head for Kyoto. However, Kamakura with it's famous buddha is just about one hour south. Take your pick of excursions, but don't stay in town.
