Pros: Food overall was good, but not always excellent, as it should be on this cruise

My wife and I were on this 10-day cruise. Wife has eye disorder: retinitis pigmatosa (night blindness and no peripheral vision) and I have no sphincter control. Toilet in cabin was not working last two nights (each night after 12 a.m.) of cruise. Toilet backed up and overfilled on its own and we both had to use a small trash can to go to the bathroom and then carry it with the waste outside of our cabin to the hallway. Staff at desk (Katrina) was very rude and not helpful. In fact, originally Katrina (Front Desk) said that it would be fixed from the outside without any one having to come into our suite. Two hours later it still was not fixed and when I called back, we were told that they were not aware that it had not been fixed and we were asked to hold off going to the restroom -- unbelievable. Issues were reported to the Hotel Director (Paolo) on board who advised that he had no authority to make any accomodations or provide any refunds. Paolo said that he reported the problems to the Director of Guest Relations on shore, Frank Sansone, but still to no avail. Paying upwards of $1,000/Day for this experience is unavailing. We have been on more than 100 Cruises and NEVER experienced such a HORRIFIC experience of having to squat and go to the bathroom in a small metal trash can in our Cabin and then carry it and the waste out to the hallway. The most memorable part of a cruise is like a movie or reading a book - the Ending! I have e-mailed and called (leaving voice mail messages for Frank Sansone (954-468-3015) which have been ignored to date.

This is the newest Silversea ship and I believe is the current flagship. She is a lovely vessel, five years old, and is about to go into drydock for a refurbishment...so she will be even lovelier. Silversea has a devoted following and for good reasons: Great accommodations, superb staff, great itineraries, excellent food. What else could you want? This was a transatlantic cruise and there were only 160 of us on a ship that carries 540. So we were certainly never crowded. In fact, there are more crew members on board than there are passengers. Thus, Silverseas usual outstanding service is even more exemplary. There are always one or two waiters hoveringto carry your plate, remove your dirty dishes or bring you a cup of cappuccino or expresso. In fact, the only problem I have encountered on board is the quality of the regular coffee they serve. It has an off flavor that I think comes from the water they use. But today we discovered that we can have Americano coffee brewed for us on their Illy machines and it is quite excellent. Silversea is super-luxury line that caters to very high end cruisers. Perhaps only Seabourn is in the same class, although Regent Seven Seas is close. There is much discussion about these three lines among the passengers, with some feeling the food is better on one and the entertainment better on another. The fact that Regent now includes shore excursions (which Silversea and Seabourn do not) is noted. Silversea does include alcoholic beverages, both in your statement and elsewhere on ship. There are no charges anywhere except in the shops and casino, for shore excursions and in two of the specialty restaurants. This is very easy to get used to. It is lovely to have wine poured for your meals (several choices available), appetizers served in the bars and any kind of coffee you might want. For such a small ship, the Spirit offers a wide range of dining options which we will be exploring throughout the cruise. Two of these have upcharges. Le Champagne is the Relais & Chateux offering ($30 per person) and Seishin is the Asian restaurant ($20 for the four-course menu or $30 for the nine-course degustation. (We will be dining there tonight so I will fill you in on that later.) There is also an Italian restaurant, a supper club serving tapas and an outdoor grill restaurant featuring hot rocks cooking. What fun! It appears that most people onboard are choosing the small dining rooms. Last night we ate in the main dining room and it seems that there was only table at each station. Kind of weird. Because of the relatively small number of passengers aboard, we are meeting people at perhaps a slower rate than usual but each day we know a few more. There are no children aboard, except for one toddler and the captain's three young children. There are no programs for children or teens. The age group on board is 60+.
