We had a great time aboard the Diamond Princess!, August 13, 2016
Reviewer: lewolf

Pros: The design of the cabin with a large closet was very nice.

Cons: The cabin steward and waitress could have been more personable.

Date of cruise: July 25, 2016

Departure port: Yokohama

Region visited: Asia/Far East

Cabin category: Outside

Cabin number: E203

Good for children: Yes

Good for teenagers: Yes

We have a great time aboard the Diamond Princess. The ship was clean. The design of the cabin was excellent for storage. The shows were very professional. Enjoyed having the movies outside by the pool. The fish in the dining room was not very fresh. The waitress and the cabin steward could have been more personable. No towel animals at night in the room.

It iwas my worst cruise experience with Princess, April 21, 2014
Reviewer: andy267

Pros: High end goods in the shops

Cons: No AC, bad service in Horizon Court, slow tender service.

Date of cruise: April 2, 2014

Departure port: Singapore

Region visited: Asia/Far East

Cabin category: Balcony

Cabin number: c627

The A/C did not work until the ninth day of our 13-day cruise with the outside temp over 95 degrees. Forgot my breakfast three times, have to ask for service before the drinks are served in the Horizon Court. Have to pay for the food as per each order in one of the specialty rest. By the time we received the tender tickets it took two hours to set foot on land.

Very pleased with the Diamond Princess, July 18, 2013
Reviewer: travelguy

Pros: Use of park rangers on board to explain the Alanskan wildlife and glaciers

Cons: The kids program that my 10- and 12-year-olds were in was more for younger kids

Date of cruise: July 6, 2013

Departure port: Vancouver

Region visited: Alaska

Cabin number: B202

Good for children: Yes

We thoroughly enjoyed our cruise on Princess. We felt as if they did a fantastic job introducing us to Alaska - including it's geography and its wildlife. Bringing the Park Rangers on board and having them talk on the PA system was a joy for us. They were spotting wildlife far in the distance and alerting us in plenty of time so we could get to a viewing area and take pictures if we wanted. We also really enjoyed the many comfortable common sitting areas on board. We felt like Princess must specialize in the Alaskan cruises based on their many ties there including their own train in Alaska and their own bus system. We also felt as if our ship was getting preferential treatment when going through the fjords and visiting the glaciers. Another subtle difference between Princess and some other lines we have sailed is that we rarely were bothered by announcements on our in-room speakers marketing/selling products or excursions to us. Plenty was available, but we weren't getting the hard sell 24/7. Lastly, the embarkation and disembarkation process was extremely smooth. Overall...very impressed by the Diamond Princess.

Nice ship, great itinerary, October 31, 2010

This 38-day cruise from Vancouver to Singapore was a great experience. The ship was the biggest we've been on but did not feel crowded and after a day it was easy to find your way around. Our inside cabin was fine and our cabin steward excellent. The food was good, not great, but service was very good on most nights. Entertainment was fair and the casino very unfair. The ports of call were fantastic. There were even a few reasonable shore excursions. A bit of advice: Don't leave the ship without toilet paper in China, Vietnam and Thailand. The language can be a problem in some parts but the people really try to help you out. Forget the ship's spa and try the massages in town. They can range from $6-$20 for 40-60 minutes. Also try some places on your own, but be smart and don't go to far off the beaten path. Be prepared for some long bus rides; some cities are 2-2.5 hours away. Buses are air-conditioned. Enjoy the scenery and be thankful for what you have. Respect their culture and religious buildings, follow their lead and always ask if you can take a photo. For shoppers, feel free to bargain in the marketplaces and start at about 25% of what they originally tell you. You'll usually end up at 50%; bargaining is half the fun. Ended up in Singapore; very clean and tons of choices for food. Lot of malls and everyone had food courts with cuisine from all over Asia. The Diamond Princess went into dry dock after this cruise and will be back at sea 11-3-2010 with new additions. It was a nice ship before and looks like it will be even better.

Beautiful ship, friendly crew, October 14, 2010
Reviewer: woodhall

Pros: Ship condition and amenities

Cons: Room service language problem

Date of cruise: March 1, 2006

Departure port: Sydney

Region visited: South Pacific/Australia

We sailed on the Diamond Princess from Sydney to San Francisco for 29 days and had a wonderful cruise. The only minor problem we had was the poor understanding of English by most of the room service staff, a fault on most ships. We would sail again on this ship anytime.

Worst cruise ever, July 16, 2010

Pros: The pools were beautiful, the food and restaurant staff wonderful.

Cons: Pushy staff; overcrowded; too big.

Departure port: Los Angeles

Region visited: Mexico

Cabin category: Balcony

Just personal preference and not the reason for the bad review: This ship was HUGE and it holds a lot of people. Too big. It really felt like the ship was overbooked, but I think it was just the design. The walkways were small and obstructed. The ship is VERY long and to get from one thing (event, pool, restaurant) to another was tiring. (By the way, I am an in-shape mom who walks over a mile every day for exercise.) The bad and the ugly: I wrote a two-page letter of complaint after sailing on this ship. Yes, the ship is huge and it takes forever to get anywhere...but it's partially because pushy staff kept trying to make you buy extras. You couldn't even walk across the main deck to the buffet without being stopped several times and asked to buy something...photos, soda, alcohol, face painting, ice cream. Staff grabbed my daughter and tried to make her pose for pictures several times (on board and while getting on and off the ship). I wanted to yell at them but I stayed calm for my daughter's sake; but she said, "Mom, I don't like it when they grab me." I found myself on guard to protect her as we walked past camera staff. (By the way, they were lurking everywhere; it was creepy.) It was obvious that the staff was stressed because they were being made to push purchases on us and people were obviously annoyed. They messed up our shore excursion and there was "no room" for "another child" on the pirate ship, even though we had booked ahead and had confirmation. We were also there before others that they started loading while trying to figure out what happened to her reservation and we were left with crying daughter and no pirate adventure. We were very polite about it; mistakes will happen; but they were not! They were just irritated that we were delaying the excursion. The ship offered nothing to make up for it and it happened to be one of the last excursions so we were stuck. The "higher" ranked staff were rude and stuck up. The last couple of days there was always a line of people at the customer desk filing complaints and lowering tips; the staff just acted annoyed. Standing in line you could hear one complaint after another and the staff (ranked crewmen) just didn?t seem to care. Horrible customer service! The whole time you felt like the goal of the cruise ship staff was to get more money out of you. The Spa: I paid for a massage at the spa, 1.5 hours. At the start I said, ?I use my own products and don?t want to buy any.? She still spent 30 minutes of my time (20 before and 10 after) trying to sell me products. Before she kept telling me what she would use and how wonderful it is. I repeated what I said in the middle and she said, ?I just want you to know what we?re using.? It was obviously a sales thing. When I told her for a final time that I wasn't interested she said something insulting like, "Well, you can't expect to see any improvement then." What a downer! And here I thought I had good skin. (Pretty sure I do.) At the end I told her I did not want to pay for 1.5 hours when I only got one and she told me I had already been charged and I would have to go to the front service desk and file for a refund. (Remember that line I told you about.) This is not my first cruise. I LOVED the other ones and I am not hard to please...this ship was obnoxious. The kids program was a joke. They had an outside area with a wading pool and very high safety railings and it looked great..except the pool was empty and everything was covered. I asked why and they just said, "We don't use it much." I asked if they were re-designing it or something and they admitted, "No, we just don't have enough staff to watch kids inside and outside. Other ship we were on had organized activities, games, and parties. They basically offered a room to play in, video games, and snacks. They advertised a "teen program" but my teen said they didn't have anything for them to do but show up and play video games and basketball, which they could do anyway. All of my family agreed that it was the lowest quality cruise we have taken. Speaking of advertised activities: The free ones were mostly "closed,? ?being cleaned? or ?being repaired,? while the ones costing money were open. Big surprise. Day 3: My eyes became swollen for no apparent reason. They were goopy and gross and it was an obvious infection or virus. This had never happened to me before and I was worried I caught some sort of weird ship-transmitted viral/infectious thing. I went to the ship's dpctpr and they were closed until 10 a.m. I explained my situation (which was obvious by looking at me) and a couple of rude nurses just told me to come back after 10. I came back at 10:30 and they told me the doctor was on break. I came back at 11 and they proceeded to tell me it was going to cost like $250 to see him. I told them that for that price I could just put drops in them and hope it didn?t get worse until we got to shore the next day..., but weren't they worried about a transmittable infection? Didn't they want me at least be checked? Nope, they could care less what I had or who I spread it to. By the way, I saw a few other people walking around like that over the next couple of days...it was obviously something contagious. That is irresponsible and a safety issue. Disgusting. By the way. that two-page letter of complaint: I addressed all this and more, with specific dates, times, and names, and I asked for a partial refund; they didn't even bother to respond to any of my complaints except to send me a free spa certificate for my lost 30 minutes. Are you kidding me? When should I use that?n my next Princess Cruise? I will make the best of anything, anywhere, and I did, and I have some beautiful, once-in-a-lifetime memories, but NEVER EVER AGAIN will I sail Princess. Even with their issues I can see the good where it is so here it is: Good things: the ship itself was beautiful. It was too big for me but if they didn't cram too many people on it the size would have just been my preference. The pools and the decor were beautiful. The restaurants were great and the service at them was excellent. The room attendant was excellent. It was poor design to make the popular spaces too small (like the walkway on the main deck), but the upside of that is there were quite a few places I found where there was almost no one and you could sit in peace and watch he waves go by. Library was nice. They have a covered pool that felt like you were in a beautiful green house; it was also less crowded. The entertainment was good and they had a great comedian. It's too bad they care more about an extra few bucks than quality of service and providing a nice vacation. I'm not cheap; I'll throw out some extra bucks on a vacation. But on this ship I felt like I was in a power struggle to hold onto every nickel and dime. In the end they are just hurting themselves. I remember I went on a lovely Celebrity Cruise a few years back and they staff was so endearing and so wonderful that I ended up buying lots of extra pictures and such because they made it fun to be in the pictures. They had areas set up where they would take your photo, if you wanted, and then they would post all the beautiful photos in front of the main dining room. Everyone would look for their photos while they waited to get in for their dinner. It gave you something to do. No one was pushy about it. People were waiting in line to get photos, not running from camera crews. Then they had a nice booth that you could go to if you wanted to buy a copy. I was happy to buy several over-priced photos from them because the staff was friendly and made you feel good. Princess should take a lesson.., people spend more when they are treated with respect and given options.
