The process of shopping for and booking a cruise generally takes consumers several weeks if not longer, and the bookings themselves are made many months in advance of sailings.

1. Consumer demand.

CruiseCompete is an online cruise marketplace where consumers request quotes on specific cruise sailings, and receive competing offers from more than 500 independent member travel agencies. The data is very robust, with monthly request volume ranging from about 20,000 to 30,000 individual cruise quote requests.

The data points in an individual quote request include the cruise line, ship, sail date, itinerary length, cruise region, cabin types, departure port and number and age categories of passengers. All data is archived for comparisons to previous months/years.

2. Consumer booking trends.

A key statistic on the health of a cruise line's business is the booking window: the average number of days between the time a customer books and when the ship sails. As the window shrinks, so does the demand pool (as fewer people can travel on limited notice and airfares tend to increase), so shorter windows generally mean lower cruise rates. Based on bookings via the CruiseCompete system, cruise booking window data can be derived by cruise line and by cruise region. We also have data on actual cruise fares, which can differ significantly from advertised rates on certain cruise lines.
